Movie Review - Peepli Live
Peepli Live truly captures the image of the rural India in all its glory!!
The cinematography of the movie is so different and it truly captures the rustic Peepli quite well.
The story revolves round two brothers, the eldest of the two being the smarter then the other. Upon hearing a rumor that the government is ready to pay a certain amount of compensation for every family whose earning member has committed suicide the elder brother persuades the younger brother to commit suicide slyly. What happens thereafter forms the crux of the movie.
The characters have been sketched to perfection and you do not feel even for a second that one is more important then the other. Every character stands out beautifully.
Be it the crazy eccentric mother of “Natha” who ensures that she has the choicest words ready for her daughter-in-law. This beedi smoking mother of the two is a far cry from the usual screen mothers portrayed in Indian cinema.
Natha’s wife’s character too has been sketched well. Apart from this there are a few more characters that stand out one of them being the journalist in the making who gets the small town of Peepli to the attention of the entire country.
“Peepli Live” has a certain earthiness attached to it and is an apt satire to the current political conditions that is prevailing in Rural India. The way the selfish politicians can not think of anything other than their own selfish needs has been portrayed so amazingly well!!
Not to forget the media frenzy over anything that can gain them TRPs. The amount to which the media people can stoop down in order to cover something that is giving them a good TRP is metaphorically shown when a media person goes down to the extent of explaining the defecated contents of the person around which the media attention is focused on.
The movie has some amazing music again not the usual bollywood style music but folk music which is again so apt. Two thumbs up for that!!
Even though the movie is comical in general the crux of the movie is very stark and on the face. It grips you till the very end and makes you wonder if you could do something to change it!!
The performances of the two protagonists are amazing!! I would say grab some pop corn and go and watch this movie cos it’s a worth watching this Independence day weekend!!
