Apple of my eye!

As I walked out of the train station I noticed that it had started raining. There was quite a crowd outside waiting for the rain to stop. Some moaning for not having an umbrella.

There he was standing right outside wearing an overcoat, his eyes eagerly watching the people passing by. Some people opening their bags to retrieve their umbrellas and without a look simply passed by. Some others where simply staring at the wares he was selling. Contemplating. What a perfect time to sell Umbrellas right in front of people caught in the rain.

As I walked past him and the overly priced umbrellas I couldn't help wonder haven't I seen this somewhere. It was more like the auto wallahs in Bangalore waiting for you outside your office knowing very well that they will get double the fare from you because of the rain.

The rain falling on the sunny sidewalks made the streets look so beautiful. As I walked past I came across a family walking slowly without a haste. The father was carrying a child on his shoulder and the mother holding the other child's hand. All getting wet in the rain. But they all seemed happy and gay.

The cycle rickshaws were rushing last minute commuters towards the station. As where the yellow cabs.

The smell of felafel's and kebabs wafted into the air from the roadside vendors. Some of them selling fried peanuts, cashew nuts and almonds. Towards the corner people were bargaining for watches and bags from the road side vendor selling stuff for a cheap price.

Its strange how you search for familiarity in a new place. Sometimes it could be a familiarity that could be good. Sometimes it could be a familiarity that is not so good.

In both the cases you love this commonality that makes you feel comfortable in an otherwise alien environment.

This is my take on Big Apple. So hep and so fast paced. Yet so down to earth. So familiar at the same time so different.
